The Minnesota Vikings got more than they bargained for when they signed Sam Darnold to a one-year deal. The 27-year-old quarterback is having a breakout season, leading the Vikings to a 10-2 record while posting career-best stats in multiple categories.
Despite having rookie J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings, the Vikings may be forced to part ways with Darnold due to his rising market value. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Darnold’s next contract is expected to surpass what the Vikings can afford. Speaking on FOX Sports’ The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Schultz highlighted growing league-wide interest in Darnold, fueled by teams looking to avoid spending valuable draft picks to secure a quarterback.
“Darnold’s probably going to command a deal similar to what Baker Mayfield got,” Schultz noted. In March, Mayfield signed a three-year, $100 million extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the QB market heating up, Darnold’s price tag could climb even higher.
