Red Sox have struggled to gain favor with their fanbase this offseason, but that could change if a recent report leads to a move.
San Diego Padres pitcher Dylan Cease is reportedly drawing interest from Boston.
“Among the teams showing interest in Dylan Cease are the Red Sox,” MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported on Tuesday. “He’s an option for them on the trade market if Corbin Burnes and Max Fried sign elsewhere.”
This shift in focus comes as the Red Sox find themselves in need of starting pitching, with Fried opting to sign with the New York Yankees and multiple reports suggesting that Burnes is leaning toward a move to the San Francisco Giants—though no deal is finalized. Garrett Crochet has also been mentioned as a potential target, but Boston has not been as aggressive as the two New York teams, who are clearly still active in the market.
Cease, possibly the best pitcher of the four mentioned, is now reportedly attracting interest from Boston.
But would San Diego actually make this trade?
The Padres may not have much choice, as they are facing payroll restrictions and are reportedly “at least exploring” the possibility of trading the 28-year-old, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Roki Sasaki has also been linked to the Padres, with the potential for a strong pitching duo alongside Yu Darvish. Meanwhile, Michael King’s excellent postseason performance and several internal options like Matt Waldron, Randy Vasquez, Adrian Morejon, and Bryan Hoeing could help fill out the Padres’ rotation.
The Red Sox have the assets to make a trade, but the question remains whether they’ll be willing to part with valuable players to pull it off.
