It’s hard to discuss this season’s Minnesota Timberwolves without mentioning Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. Both are skilled players, and while Minnesota’s front office clearly wanted to bring them in, integrating them into the team has proven to be a difficult process.
The Timberwolves faced a tough decision this past offseason, essentially having to choose between giving up one valuable asset or another. Karl-Anthony Towns, the cornerstone of the team, remained key to Minnesota’s identity, but management felt that keeping him and his hefty contract, while losing players like Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Naz Reid, would have been even more damaging to their championship aspirations.
It wasn’t an easy decision, but in the blink of an eye, KAT was traded to the New York Knicks, and Randle and DiVincenzo arrived in the Twin Cities. Suddenly, the Timberwolves were tasked with reshaping their roster around two new main pieces.
Now, six weeks into the season, the Wolves are realizing that the challenges of retooling their roster are more difficult and taking longer to resolve than they had expected. While there have been some positive moments, disappointments have also surfaced, prompting questions about Randle’s long-term future with the team.
