The Astros shook up the MLB trade market on Friday, and more moves could be on the horizon.
Houston sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski, and Cam Smith. This deal may have set the stage for a bigger move, as the Astros have emerged as a “serious suitor” for All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. While no deal is considered “imminent,” talks between the Astros and Cardinals have reportedly intensified following the MLB winter meetings.
The Red Sox have also been linked to a potential blockbuster trade for Arenado. As the Cardinals’ star third baseman holds a no-trade clause, he has the power to choose his destination, and reports suggest he would be open to waiving it to join Boston.
If the Astros succeed in landing Arenado, it would likely end any chance of a reunion with Alex Bregman. The Red Sox were also linked to Bregman during the winter meetings, but Houston general manager Dana Brown stated that negotiations with Bregman remain unchanged following the Tucker trade. The Astros are believed to have offered Bregman a six-year, $156 million contract extension.
The outcome of Arenado’s trade could have a significant impact on the infield market, with multiple teams watching closely to see where the Cardinals’ star lands.
