Hurricanes Loses Top Starting Wideout, Player Hits Transfer Portal

Isaiah Horton, who would have been Miami’s top returning receiver for the 2025 season, is entering the transfer portal, according to multiple reports. Horton ranked third on the team with 56 receptions for 616 yards and fourth with five touchdowns during the 2024 season. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Horton, a member of Miami’s 2022 recruiting class, was ranked as the 372nd overall prospect, 56th wide receiver, and 11th player in Tennessee from Murfreesboro, Oakland. He redshirted in 2022 and recorded 13 catches for 168 yards and one touchdown as a redshirt freshman in 2023.

Following Colbie Young’s transfer to Georgia after the 2023 season, Horton became a dependable target for All-American quarterback Cam Ward, behind Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George. Standing 6’4″ and weighing 205 pounds, Horton’s productive season should make him an attractive transfer option.

Miami could enter the 2025 season without its top four wide receivers. Restrepo and George have finished their eligibility, and Sam Brown is considering entering the NFL Draft. Since the transfer portal opened on December 9, Miami has been actively recruiting wide receivers.

Miami signed four-star wide receivers Ny Carr, Chance Robinson, and JoJo Trader in the 2024 class as potential replacements for Xavier Restrepo, Isaiah Horton, and possibly Sam Brown. Rising redshirt sophomore Ray Ray Joseph is expected to step into Restrepo’s role as the starting slot receiver for Miami in 2025, depending on the additions from the transfer portal.

Replacing Horton’s size will be a challenge, as Brown and Robinson, both standing at 6’2″, are the second-tallest scholarship wide receivers on the roster. With Horton transferring, the incoming freshmen are expected to see playing time in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against Iowa State, behind Brown, George, and Restrepo.

Horton has already been linked to Alabama, with On3 projecting that he will sign with the Crimson Tide. CaneSport also reported that a deal between Horton and Alabama is imminent. Over his career at Miami, Horton totaled 70 receptions for 790 yards and six touchdowns.
