The New York Yankees are aiming to reduce their payroll following the signing of Max Fried and the trade for Cody Bellinger. FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray discussed the possibility of Marcus Stroman being traded during a recent appearance on “The Baseball Insiders” podcast.
He suggested that a trade involving Stroman is more likely than not. The Yankees’ rotation is nearly set with Fried joining Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón at the top, while Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt are expected to fill the Nos. 4 and 5 spots. If Stroman is traded, it would mark his third team in as many seasons.
After joining the Yankees in free agency for the 2024 season, Stroman posted a 4.31 ERA in 30 appearances (29 starts). His performance in New York has been underwhelming, as his strikeout rate dropped to a career-low 6.6 K/9. With two years of team control left, Stroman could still bring a solid return, although interested teams may ask the Yankees to cover part of his salary.
If the Yankees agree to retain salary, it could give them leverage to acquire a higher-rated player or prospect. With two All-Star selections and a Gold Glove to his name, Stroman still has the potential to turn things around with another team.
