The Miami Dolphins are releasing two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Shaquil Barrett from the reserve/retired list, his agent confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.
At 32, Barrett could make a return this season if he clears waivers and signs with another team. However, if another team claims him, he would be ineligible to play for the remainder of the season.
“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq the chance to continue his NFL career,” said Barrett’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus. “We hope he clears waivers and becomes a free agent so he can get back on the field this season. He’s in excellent shape and ready to play right away.”
Barrett announced his retirement in July, just four months after signing a one-year, $9 million deal with the Dolphins. However, he had a change of heart and requested reinstatement on November 26, a request the Dolphins ultimately denied.
An undrafted player out of Colorado State in 2014, Barrett played 131 games (85 starts) over nine seasons with the Denver Broncos (2014-18) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2019-23). During his career, he won Super Bowls with both teams and accumulated 400 tackles (73 for loss), 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles, and three interceptions.
His standout season came in 2019 with the Buccaneers, when he led the NFL with 19.5 sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. Barrett also made the Pro Bowl again in 2021 after recording 10 sacks.
