Browns, QB Agree On Reworked Contract.

The Browns and veteran QB Deshaun Watson have reached a new agreement on his $230 million fully-guaranteed contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. While the deal doesn’t change Watson’s pay for the final two years, it will adjust Cleveland’s salary cap commitments for the seasons ahead.

The Cleveland Browns and Deshaun Watson have agreed to restructure his fully-guaranteed $230 million contract, but his pay remains unchanged. As reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Watson will continue to earn $46 million per year over the next two seasons. The key change involves shifting some of the cap hit into new voidable years. Previously, Watson’s deal had two void years after 2027, but with the updated terms, that number has now increased to four.

This move signals that the Browns aren’t giving up on Watson as their franchise quarterback, despite the rocky start to his tenure in Cleveland. Watson’s contract, which runs through 2026, suggests he could remain the team’s starting QB for the next two years.

While Watson’s early career showed promise with impressive seasons for the Texans, his trade to the Browns was marred by controversy, including multiple sexual harassment allegations. These issues led to an 11-game suspension and the Browns’ decision to guarantee Watson the largest contract in NFL history. Since then, Watson has struggled with injuries, missing 21 games in two seasons, and his record as a starter is just 9-10.

Despite these challenges, the Browns have structured the deal to make it easier to move on if needed, potentially lowering the dead money cap hit in future seasons. As a result, the team remains committed to Watson for now but is also exploring backup options, including possibly bringing in Jameis Winston, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, or drafting a QB. However, the restructured contract ensures Watson is likely to return as the starter in 2025.
