The Dolphins‘ playoff hopes could be dashed as soon as today if both the Chargers defeat the Patriots and the Broncos beat the Bengals. If either scenario happens, or if Miami loses to the Browns on Sunday, their postseason chances will end, and veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell is expected to be released.

Campbell, who has acknowledged the possibility of being cut when the Dolphins‘ playoff hopes end, would go through waivers. Any team, regardless of playoff contention, could claim him for the final regular season week or beyond. If unclaimed, Campbell will become a free agent.

The Ravens showed interest in him before the trade deadline, but Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel persuaded him to stay with the understanding that he’d be released if the Dolphins’ playoff hopes evaporated. The Ravens are a likely destination, along with the Vikings and Lions. If Campbell’s goal is a championship, the Chiefs could be the best fit.

Campbell expressed his long-held desire for a championship, saying, “My whole career I’ve been close, but no cigar. I want that cigar.”

If Miami’s playoff hopes persist beyond this weekend, Campbell may face a tough decision. Leaving a team still in the hunt would be complicated, even if they ultimately miss the postseason or lose in the wild-card round. However, once Miami’s season ends, Campbell’s contract locks, preventing his release if they’re eliminated in Week 18.

This creates an interesting subplot for the final two weeks of the season. If Miami’s playoff hopes are officially over by Monday, any non-playoff team could claim Campbell off waivers, giving him a chance to join another squad for a potential playoff run.
