Braves Set to Shake Up Roster with Major Pitcher Trade

The Braves have focused on two main objectives this offseason: reducing payroll and strengthening the depth of their organization. However, Alex Anthopoulos is unlikely to remain inactive throughout the winter.

The reason for this is simple — the Braves cannot start the season with their current roster as it stands, particularly in one key area. The outfield has only one returning starter from last season, Michael Harris II. The status of Ronald Acuña Jr. remains uncertain, and Jarred Kelenic is now relegated to a bench role.

Additionally, the Braves could benefit from adding another starting pitcher with Max Fried leaving and Charlie Morton potentially following suit. They may also need to add a high-leverage reliever, given Joe Jiménez’s possible season-long absence and A.J. Minter’s impending free agency.

While the Braves typically keep their plans under wraps, we did get some insight from David O’Brien of The Athletic, who reported that the team has shown interest in Tanner Scott.

Tim Britton from The Athletic projected a 4-year, $64M deal for Scott in early November, while MLB Trade Rumors anticipated 4 years at $56M. Given the current market, O’Brien suggests Britton’s projection is likely more accurate and might even be on the low side.

Tanner Scott is considered one of the best remaining relievers on the free agent market. After posting a 1.75 ERA over 72 innings with the Marlins and Padres in 2023, his 2.92 FIP suggests his ERA could have been slightly higher, but his strong performance provides confidence against any significant regression. If O’Brien’s report is accurate, Tanner Scott would be an excellent addition to the Braves’ bullpen.
