San Diego Padres Signs Former Cubs Prospect.
On December 16, the San Diego Padres announced the signing of center fielder Cole Roederer to a minor league contract, marking their 13th such signing this offseason as they work to strengthen their developmental pipeline. Alongside Roederer, the team also signed right-handed pitcher Miguel Alvarez, emphasizing their focus on adding depth to the organization.
Roederer was originally selected by the Chicago Cubs as the 77th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, opting to bypass UCLA to begin his professional career. By 2020, he was ranked as one of the Cubs’ top prospects, earning the No. 5 spot in their system. However, his progress toward the Major Leagues has been slower than expected, and his anticipated 2023 debut did not materialize.
Throughout his time in the minors, Roederer has shown flashes of potential, but also faced setbacks. He reached Triple-A in September 2023 with the Iowa Cubs, where he showed improved offensive performance compared to his earlier Double-A stint. In 2024, he began the season with the Tennessee Smokies in Double-A, displaying defensive versatility in all three outfield positions, primarily in left field.
In May 2024, he returned to Triple-A and transitioned to center field, but his offensive struggles persisted, leading to a career-worst season. Roederer posted a .186 batting average, .306 on-base percentage, and .617 OPS, marking the first time he finished below .200 at the plate.
Now 25, Roederer joins the Padres at a critical juncture in his career. His offensive challenges remain, but his defensive skills and previous promise as a prospect provide hope for a rebound. If he regains his earlier form, Roederer could become a valuable asset in the Padres’ minor league system and potentially earn a Major League opportunity.
