Browns Eye Historic NFL Quarterback Record in Showdown with Ravens!
In Saturday’s divisional matchup with the Baltimore Ravens, the Cleveland Browns have a chance to set a historic NFL record by starting the most quarterbacks in consecutive seasons. Last year, the Browns used five quarterbacks—Deshaun Watson, Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR), P.J. Walker, Joe Flacco, and Jeff Driskel—tying the NFL record set by the 1987 New England Patriots. This year, Watson, DTR, and Jameis Winston have started games, with Bailey Zappe, signed from the Chiefs‘ practice squad, on the roster but yet to play.
After Watson’s injury, Winston was benched following 13 interceptions in seven games. DTR, taking over from Week 16, also struggled, throwing six picks and losing a fumble in just 115 passing attempts. Given their turnover issues, it seems likely that both Winston and DTR have played their final games with Cleveland. The team will need three reliable quarterbacks heading into 2025 training camp, and Zappe could be one of them—if he gets the chance to play.
Zappe, drafted by the Patriots in 2022, had a standout college career at Western Kentucky, setting records for most passing yards (5,967) and touchdowns (62) in a season. He also won several awards, including Conference USA MVP. In his rookie year, Zappe won both of his starts with a 100.9 QB rating. However, in 2023, he struggled with 12 interceptions and 11 touchdowns in 10 games.
A performance against the Ravens could reveal whether Zappe has a future with the Browns, or if they will join him with DTR and Winston as part of the search for a more reliable option.
