After a 10-4 season, Dabo Swinney is making changes to his coaching staff. On Wednesday night, reports indicated that Clemson and defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin have mutually agreed to part ways.
Swinney promoted Goodwin to defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2021, after Brent Venables left for the head coaching job at Oklahoma. Swinney praised Goodwin, saying, “All I can tell you is Wes Goodwin is special… Wes has worked with the best of the best… He’s worked obviously with Brent, so he has a wealth of experience that I think he will tap into and do it his way.”
Under Goodwin’s guidance, Clemson’s defense ranked in the top 10 in 2023 for total defense, first downs allowed per game, opponent passing yards per game, and interceptions. The Tigers also led the nation in turnovers, defensive touchdowns, and pick-sixes.

However, in 2024, the defense experienced a significant decline, finishing 62nd in yards allowed per game.
Recent reports suggest that Goodwin may be joining Venables at Oklahoma. With Sooners’ defensive coordinator Zac Alley likely heading to West Virginia, it could open the door for Goodwin to take over the position.
