Rams unveil major announcement before Week 18.
The Los Angeles Rams made a significant announcement on Wednesday.
Rams head coach Sean McVay informed reporters that quarterback Matthew Stafford will not play in Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. Instead, backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will get the start.
If Seattle wins, both the Rams and Seahawks will be tied at 10-7. However, the Rams have already secured the NFC West title due to a tiebreaker with Seattle based on strength of victories. With the division title already clinched, the Rams are opting to rest Stafford to ensure his health.
Entering Week 18, the Rams hold the NFC’s third seed, but a loss combined with a Tampa Bay Buccaneers win could drop them to the fourth spot, leading to a challenging playoff matchup at home against the loser of the Detroit Lions-Minnesota Vikings game on Sunday night. The Buccaneers face the struggling New Orleans Saints in Week 18.
Garoppolo, in his first season with the Rams, has yet to play this year.
