Commanders’ OC Drops Bold 3-Word Take on Head Coach Openings.

As the Washington Commanders began to rack up wins, speculation around offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury potentially landing a head coaching role quickly emerged. Though the buzz surrounding Kingsbury wasn’t unexpected, the Commanders’ unexpected success, including a surprise playoff berth, opened the door for Kingsbury to leverage the team’s success into another NFL head coaching opportunity.

Kingsbury expressed interest in returning to a head coaching role, though he remains focused on his current job, as the Commanders sit at an impressive 11-5, their best regular-season record since 1991.

Kingsbury’s name has already been tied to several potential head coaching vacancies, even with teams that still have coaches. One likely destination is the Chicago Bears, where head coach Matt Eberflus was fired late in the season. Kingsbury’s track record of developing young quarterbacks, including helping Jayden Daniels become a top rookie, makes him a strong candidate to guide Caleb Williams, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, into his career. Other teams such as the New England Patriots and New York Giants, both of which have promising young quarterbacks, could also consider Kingsbury.

Heading into the 2024 season, the Commanders had a projected over/under win total of just 6.5, due in part to the uncertainty surrounding their first-year staff under head coach Dan Quinn and Kingsbury. Kingsbury’s prior stint as Arizona Cardinals head coach (2019-2022) resulted in a 28-37 record. ESPN’s NFL coaching staff rankings in August placed the Commanders 31st out of 32 teams. Despite this, the team exceeded expectations, with Quinn’s defensive system facing challenges due to a lack of star talent compared to his previous Dallas roster.
