49ers Add East Carolina CB to Their Roster in Bold New Mock Draft Pick.
The 49ers are facing a draft dilemma with no clear need, but plenty of areas to address. Sitting at 6-10 before the season’s final game, they hold the 11th overall pick and must make it count. After several poor Round 1 selections since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch took over in 2017, they can’t afford another bust.
That’s why Pro Football Network’s Sterling Xie predicts the 49ers will grab East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. at No. 11.
“Charvarius Ward is a free agent, potentially leaving San Francisco thin at cornerback,” Xie explains. “With the extension of Deommodore Lenoir, the Niners seem to be preparing for Ward’s exit, especially with several contracts, including Brock Purdy’s, looming. Selecting Revel would help cushion the blow. Though coming off an ACL tear, Revel shouldn’t miss his entire rookie year, and the 49ers are known for drafting injured-but-talented players.”
A shutdown corner like Revel would enhance the defense, enabling more aggressive man-to-man coverage and a better pass rush. But the 49ers haven’t used a top-60 pick on a cornerback since 2002 and drafted Renardo Green in the second round last year. It’s highly likely they’ll target a lineman with their first-round pick, even if cornerback is the best option available.
