Seahawks, LB Hit Pause on Contract Talks, Parting Ways Amicably!
The Seattle Seahawks and linebacker Ernest Jones IV have “amicably paused discussions” on a potential contract extension, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. While negotiations could resume at any time, Jones, in the final year of his rookie contract, appears set to enter free agency when the new league year begins in March. Jones has expressed his desire to stay in Seattle, saying he enjoys the coaching staff and the city, and hopes the two sides can reach an agreement.
Jones was acquired by the Seahawks on October 23 in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, sending linebacker Jerome Baker and a 2025 fourth-round draft pick in return. This marked a whirlwind few months for Jones, who had spent his first three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams before being traded to Tennessee in August. His arrival in Seattle sparked a dramatic defensive turnaround, with the Seahawks’ defense improving significantly since Week 9.
Before his arrival, Seattle’s defense struggled, ranking near the bottom of the league in points and rushing yards allowed. Since then, they have been among the best, holding opponents to just 18.5 points and 97.8 rushing yards per game.
Jones’ impact has been undeniable. He ranks 17th out of 84 linebackers in run defense grading and is tied for fourth with 18 run stops. Safety Julian Love credited Jones as the main factor in the team’s improvement, praising his leadership and defensive mentality. Defensive coordinator Clint Macdonald also lauded Jones, calling him a “force multiplier” who elevates those around him and a perfect fit for Seattle. Jones’ contributions have earned him respect and admiration within the organization.
