Sean Payton Teases That a Broncos Assistant is Bound for a Head Coaching Comeback!
While few expected much from the Denver Broncos this season, they proved their growth by securing the final AFC wild-card spot in Week 18 with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs’ backups.
At the same time, several teams on the outside looking in for the playoffs are set to have head coaching openings, with interviews already underway.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton recently predicted that one of his assistant coaches will soon get another shot at leading an NFL team.
Sean Payton recently shared his belief that defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will get another shot at being a head coach. “I think that Vance is going to be a head coach again,” Payton said, according to Zac Stevens of DNVR Sports.
Vance Joseph served as the Broncos’ head coach from 2017 to 2018, during their rebuilding phase after Peyton Manning’s retirement. After being let go with an 11-21 record, Joseph spent four seasons as the Arizona Cardinals‘ defensive coordinator before returning to Denver to join Sean Payton’s staff.
While rookie quarterback Bo Nix displayed significant potential, especially as the season progressed, the Denver Broncos’ playoff push was largely fueled by their strong defense. The team finished the regular season ranked third in points allowed, with pass rushers Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper stepping up their game.
However, the Broncos face a tough challenge in the wild-card round as they head to Buffalo to take on the Bills, who finished the season 13-4 and are considered by some as strong Super Bowl contenders.
