The New York Rangers are making strides to turn their season around, with reports suggesting more trades could be coming. However, there’s one player on the trade block who should definitely remain with the team.
Rangers have given Jones permission to talk to other teams
According to Elliotte Friedman, New York has allowed defenseman Zac Jones to speak with other teams. There seems to be interest in the young player, and Jones likely has strong reasons to seek a fresh start away from the Rangers at this point.
Although Zac Jones has outperformed much of the Rangers’ defensive lineup, he’s been a healthy scratch for most of this season. Frustrated by his limited playing time, Jones may ultimately look for a new team where he can get more opportunity on the ice.
Jones needs to be in the lineup over Miller
Scratching Jones at this stage of the season doesn’t make much sense. At just 24 years old, he has outperformed several of the Rangers’ top-pairing defensemen, including K’Andre Miller.
Miller has clearly been the weakest link for the Rangers, with poor decision-making and a lack of skill costing the team numerous wins. Yet, for some reason, head coach Peter Laviolette continues to keep him in the lineup. Why is Jones still sitting while Miller struggles?
With Miller set to be a free agent after this season and poised to demand a salary increase, the Rangers will be tight on cap space. It’s likely that Miller will walk in free agency, so why not move him now? Jones deserves a consistent spot on the roster, while Miller should be the one heading out of New York.
