Broncos Fire Special Teams Coordinator.
The Broncos have made a coordinator change, parting ways with their Special Teams Coordinator after two seasons in Denver, according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
The coach, who was one of the first hires made by head coach Sean Payton, brought a wealth of experience to the role. Having served as special teams coordinator with the Jets, as well as time in Washington and Atlanta, he took charge of the Bronco’s third-phase units after spending a season as an assistant ST coach with the Vikings.
Despite limited experience working directly with Payton, the 50-year-old coach oversaw a unit that saw Marvin Mims earn first-team All-Pro honors as a punt returner this year, and the team successfully converted a fake punt in their wild-card loss to the Bills. However, the coach’s tenure was marred by setbacks, such as a blocked field goal attempt in a critical Week 10 loss to Kansas City.
Given his experience, it’s likely he will find another opportunity soon. Meanwhile, attention now shifts to how Payton will fill this vacancy. The timing of the firing has raised speculation that Payton may already have a specific replacement in mind. One name being mentioned is Darren Rizzi, who served as New Orleans‘ interim head coach after Dennis Allen’s firing. Rizzi has also interviewed for head coaching roles with the Saints and Jets. If he doesn’t land a head coaching opportunity in 2025, it’s possible he could be a candidate for the Broncos’ special teams position.
