FBI grills 76ers owner in Norcross racketeering probe.

FBI investigators interviewed Sixers co-owner Josh Harris on May 6, 2024, in connection with the racketeering case against George Norcross, though the specific reason for the interview remains unclear. Harris has not been accused of any wrongdoing, and many others have been questioned in the probe. The investigation focuses on a 2013 law that increased tax incentives for Camden, with the 76ers among those benefiting by building a practice facility. Harris, 60, is also involved with the Washington Commanders and New Jersey Devils.

The case, led by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin, resulted in a 13-count indictment against Norcross and five associates, accusing them of racketeering and extortion in obtaining Camden property and tax credits. Norcross and his co-defendants have pleaded not guilty and are seeking to dismiss the charges. Harris was mentioned in a December 27, 2024, defense motion, along with a developer involved in the 76ers’ Camden project.

The revelation of Harris’ interview comes at a sensitive time for the 76ers, who recently abandoned plans for a Center City arena in favor of a new venue in South Philly, partnering with Comcast. This decision followed a $1.3 billion arena proposal approved by the city council, while New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy attempted to attract the team to Camden with tax incentives.

Prosecutors argue that Norcross led a criminal enterprise to influence legislation that increased tax incentives for Camden projects, including the 76ers’ $82 million tax credit to build their facility. The team’s dealings were handled by the law firm Parker McCay, led by Philip Norcross, George’s brother and a co-defendant. Defense attorneys claim his actions were constitutionally protected, but prosecutors say they were part of a larger criminal operation.
