Yankees add 29-year-old pitcher off waivers to boost Pitching Depth.

The Yankees have claimed RHP Allan Winans off waivers from the Braves, as reported by Chase Ford of MiLB Central. Winans, 29, has a 7.20 ERA and 4.99 FIP across eight MLB starts, striking out 20.9% of batters.

He relies on his changeup and slider more than velocity (fastball sits 89-91 MPH) to induce ground balls. Most of 2024 was spent in Triple-A, where he posted a solid 3.30 ERA over 114.2 innings. Winans adds depth to the Yankees’ 40-man roster, with potential for a spot in the bullpen or as minor league depth.

The Yankees are always on the lookout for pitching depth, and Allan Winans fits the bill as a potential spot starter who can disrupt opposing lineups with his crafty pitching. Lacking overpowering velocity, Winans relies on his changeup and slider to keep batters off balance, and the Yankees might be able to help refine those pitches further. While it’s unlikely he’ll add velocity at this stage of his career, given his consistent lack of high speed, he showed solid performance in Triple-A last season and was a reliable depth starter for the Braves in 2023.

However, it’s hard to see Winans making the Yankees’ Opening Day roster unless injuries hit hard. With the team still in need of left-handed relievers and infield help, Winans could remain on the 40-man roster as they make their final roster moves.
