Phillies could land a generational talent for their rotation this winter.
Superstar pitcher Max Scherzer remains a free agent, and the Phillies are among the teams scouting him. According to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo, Philadelphia’s interest in the eight-time All-Star suggests they might bring him in from the free-agent pool.
At 40, Scherzer is nearing the end of his MLB career, but still posted a solid 3.95 ERA in 2024 despite only playing nine games. His 1.154 WHIP shows he can still pitch effectively.
As Scherzer approaches his age-41 season, coming off $12.5 million earnings in 2024, he could provide valuable World Series experience to a talented Phillies squad—one that currently lacks a champion in its core lineup, except for Joe Ross, who won in 2019.
Although his fastball has dipped nearly 2 mph over the last three seasons, now sitting at 92.5 mph, Scherzer still excels at getting batters to chase (36.4%), miss (29.2%), and limit walks (5.6%). Even in the twilight of his career, the Phillies could benefit from adding his experience at a more affordable price.
