The Chicago Bears have bolstered their coaching staff by bringing in Dennis Allen as the new defensive coordinator. Allen, who previously served as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, was let go mid-season after a 2-7 start. Now under the leadership of new head coach Ben Johnson, a top name in this year’s coaching search, Allen will look to leverage his defensive expertise to make a significant impact on the Bears’ defense.
Dennis Allen’s Coaching History
Dennis Allen has built a long coaching career as a defensive assistant across the NFL, starting with the Atlanta Falcons in the early 2000s and later coaching with teams like the Saints and Broncos. He became the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2012, but after two seasons with a combined 8-24 record, including a 0-4 start in 2014, he was let go. Allen returned to the Saints in 2015 and quickly ascended to defensive coordinator, working under head coach Sean Payton and helping to lead the New Orleans defense for years.
In 2022, Allen took over as head coach of the Saints. His first season saw the team finish 7-10, with a solid defense but an aging roster and expensive contracts lingering from the Payton era.
In 2023, New Orleans improved to 9-8 but still missed the playoffs. Despite a strong start to the 2024 season at 2-0, the team faltered, dropping to 2-7 and ultimately finishing 5-12, leading to Allen’s firing.
While Allen’s tenure as head coach in New Orleans is often viewed as unsuccessful—mirroring his time with the Raiders—the challenges he faced with a limited roster and tough financial situation are significant factors. Now, with the Chicago Bears, Allen hopes to revitalize his career and make a real impact as their new defensive coordinator. The Bears are hopeful that with a fresh start, things will be different this time around.
Joining the Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are hoping Dennis Allen can follow the path of other former head coaches who’ve found success as defensive coordinators in the NFL. Recent examples like Steve Spagnuolo, who led the Kansas City Chiefs defense to Super Bowl victories after his stint as head coach, and Brian Flores, who revived his career with the Minnesota Vikings after coaching the Miami Dolphins, show that some defensive-minded coaches thrive better in coordinator roles.
Robert Saleh, after being fired by the Jets, also returned to his roots as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, further proving this trend.
The Bears, coming off a tough 5-12 season, are optimistic about their future. With Caleb Williams entering his second season under a revamped coaching staff, there’s plenty of room for improvement. The defense could see significant changes depending on the moves the Bears make in the offseason, through free agency and the draft.
Ben Johnson, the new head coach, is focused on building something special in Chicago, and Allen could play a crucial role in transforming the defense while Johnson likely focuses on the offense. The Bears are hoping this fresh approach brings them the success they’ve been looking for.
