The Miami Dolphins announced on Wednesday that they have hired veteran assistant Craig Aukerman as their new special teams coordinator.
Aukerman spent last season as a special teams assistant with the Rams, who won the NFC West and reached the divisional round of the playoffs. Prior to that, he worked with the Tennessee Titans for seven years—five of which were spent as special teams coordinator from 2019 to 2023, and the previous two as an assistant from 2017 to 2018.
During his time with Tennessee, Aukerman coached two Pro Bowl players: punter Brett Kern (2017-2019) and long snapper Morgan Cox (2022). Kern led the NFL in both net punting average (44.6 yards) and gross punting average (49.7 yards) in 2017.
Aukerman was let go by Tennessee during the 2023 season following a game where the Titans had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown, followed by punter Ryan Stonehouse suffering a season-ending leg injury on his next punt attempt.
He takes over the special teams role in Miami after Danny Crossman, the previous coordinator, was fired earlier this month after six seasons with the team.
