John Cook Retires as Nebraska Volleyball Head Coach, Dani Busboom Kelly Named Successor
On January 29, 2025, John Cook announced his retirement as the head coach of Nebraska’s women’s volleyball team, closing the book on a legendary 25-year career. Under his leadership, the Cornhuskers became one of the most dominant programs in college volleyball, securing four national championships and maintaining consistent excellence on the national stage.
Cook took over the program in 2000, succeeding Terry Pettit, and quickly built upon Nebraska’s winning tradition. His teams won NCAA titles in 2000, 2006, 2015, and 2017, and he developed countless All-American players who went on to successful professional and international careers. Beyond wins and championships, Cook was known for his commitment to player development, innovative coaching strategies, and fostering a culture of hard work and resilience.
Following his retirement, Nebraska swiftly named Dani Busboom Kelly as his replacement. Busboom Kelly, a former Nebraska player and assistant coach, returns to Lincoln after a highly successful tenure as the head coach at Louisville. During her time with the Cardinals, she transformed the program into a national powerhouse, leading them to multiple ACC championships and an NCAA Final Four appearance. Her coaching ability and deep ties to Nebraska make her an ideal successor to continue the Huskers’ tradition of excellence.
Busboom Kelly, who played as a libero on Nebraska’s 2006 national championship team, also served as an assistant coach for Cook, helping the Huskers win another title in 2015. Her appointment has been met with widespread support, with Cook himself praising her accomplishments and leadership skills. Social media has been abuzz with excitement, as fans and former players celebrate the hiring of a coach who understands the program’s values and expectations.
With Busboom Kelly at the helm, Nebraska volleyball enters a new era, aiming to build upon its storied history while embracing the future. Fans eagerly anticipate how she will shape the program and continue its legacy of success.
