Tampa Bay Rays seal a hot 2-year, $29 million deal!
The Tampa Bay Rays have officially secured a two-year, $29 million contract with infielder Ha-Seong Kim. Kim, who spent the first four seasons of his MLB career with the San Diego Padres, has been a standout player, especially in 2023 when he won a Gold Glove award for his exceptional defense.
As part of his new deal, the 29-year-old will earn $13 million in 2025. He also has the opportunity to earn up to $2 million in performance bonuses. These bonuses are tied to his plate appearances, with $10,000 awarded for each appearance between 326 and 525, providing an added incentive for him to stay healthy and productive. Additionally, Kim’s contract includes a $16 million player option for the 2026 season, giving him the flexibility to extend his tenure with the Rays should he choose to exercise it.
Kim’s 2024 season ended prematurely when he suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder on August 18, requiring season-ending surgery. Despite this setback, Kim had a solid final season in the final year of his previous four-year, $28 million contract. He finished the year with a .233 batting average, 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases, showcasing his value as both a power hitter and a base stealer. Over his four seasons with the Padres, Kim posted a .242 average, with 47 home runs, 200 RBIs, and 78 stolen bases in 540 major league games.
To make room for Kim on the roster, the Rays have designated left-handed pitcher Brandon Eisert for assignment. Kim’s addition bolsters the Rays’ infield and provides them with a versatile player who can contribute both offensively and defensively as they look to contend in the upcoming seasons.
