Key Player Set to Restructure His Deal with the Rams—Again!

Rams QB Matthew Stafford has been weighing his NFL future, especially with top target Cooper Kupp now on the trade block. Although Stafford hesitated to commit to 2025, he made it clear in late January that he plans to return for another season. However, to make that happen, the Rams are likely going to have to restructure the 37-year-old’s contract.

Is Matthew Stafford a Hall of Famer right now?

A year ago, Los Angeles restructured Matthew Stafford’s contract, accelerating future money to boost his 2024 pay. During last year’s draft, Stafford sought guarantees beyond 2024, following a healthy and productive 2023 season that quieted trade and retirement rumors—at least for now. However, trade speculation is surfacing once again, though Stafford has swiftly squashed retirement talk.

Despite the restructure last year, Stafford didn’t get the long-term security he was hoping for. The Rams viewed him as a year-to-year option, and while Stafford is under contract for two more years, his 2022 injuries and decline in production have led LA to evaluate its options each offseason. With the team’s year-to-year mindset in place, a quicker resolution seems likely.

Stafford is set to carry a nearly $50 million cap hit in 2024, but a new extension or restructuring could help reduce that figure. His 2025 cash salary sits at around $27 million, making a restructure even more plausible. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport report that a deal could be in the works soon, and it’ll be intriguing to see if negotiations move faster this time around.
