The Detroit Lions‘ offseason transformation continues as they add another new face to the coaching staff.
Reports on Thursday confirmed that Tashard Choice is set to join the Lions as their new running backs coach. This hire follows the move of Scottie Montgomery, the former running backs coach and assistant head coach, who will now coach wide receivers in 2025. The Lions had a vacancy for a wide receivers coach after Antwaan Randle El left to join former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson with the Chicago Bears.
Choice comes to Detroit after spending the past three seasons as the running backs coach at the University of Texas. Prior to that, he held the same position at Georgia Tech. This hire brings a personal connection for Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who will reunite with Choice, his former position coach at Georgia Tech. Choice coached Gibbs during his first two seasons at Georgia Tech from 2019 to 2021.
A former NFL player, Choice had a six-year career, playing for four teams: Dallas, Washington, Buffalo, and Indianapolis. His most productive season came as a rookie, where he totaled 92 carries for 472 yards and two touchdowns. Over his career, he amassed 1,579 yards and 10 touchdowns on 372 carries.
Choice began his coaching career as an intern with the Cowboys before returning to the college ranks as a graduate assistant at North Texas in 2017. He was promoted to running backs coach the following year and then moved to Georgia Tech in 2019.
Roehl’s New Position
Earlier this week, reports revealed that the Lions were bringing in Tyler Roehl, the former Iowa State running backs coach, as an offensive assistant. According to Detroit Football Network, Roehl will take on the role of tight ends coach for the team.
He replaces Steve Heiden, who led the tight ends for two seasons before departing to become the New York Jets’ offensive line coach under former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.
