Lions’ Backup QB Spot in Question as Trade Rumors Swirl Around Hendon Hooker
As the Detroit Lions gear up for the 2025 offseason, one thing is certain—Jared Goff remains the team’s starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. However, the backup quarterback role is uncertain, especially with Teddy Bridgewater set to hit free agency. This uncertainty has fueled speculation that the Lions could consider trading 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker.
Hooker’s Role in Limbo
Bridgewater was brought in late last season as Goff’s backup, making it clear that Hooker’s position in Detroit wasn’t firmly established. Drafted as a developmental prospect, Hooker saw little playing time in his rookie season and was even inactive during the Lions’ playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. His lack of involvement raises questions about his future, especially with Goff expected to sign a long-term deal.
Why the Lions Might Trade Hooker
With Goff firmly in place, Hooker’s chances of seeing meaningful playing time in Detroit seem slim. Given the Lions’ stable roster and core players already secured, Hooker could become a trade asset. Some analysts predict Detroit might shop him this offseason, possibly receiving a fourth-round pick from a quarterback-needy team.

Trading Hooker could allow the Lions to bring in a more experienced backup quarterback, someone more reliable in case of a Goff injury. Given Hooker’s limited development so far, Detroit might prefer a veteran with proven experience over a young, untested player.
A New Opportunity for Hooker?
A trade could also work in Hooker’s favor, giving him a fresh start in a system where he has a better chance to compete for a starting role. While moving on from him could make sense for both sides, the Lions might only trade him if the right offer comes along.
For now, Hooker remains in Detroit—but his future is far from certain.
