Steelers Make Waves with Massive Trade for $160 Million QB

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to search for a new quarterback this offseason, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields set to become free agents. General manager Omar Khan may look to make a fresh start at the position.

Art Rooney has already indicated that it’s unlikely both quarterbacks will return, though he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of one coming back.

During a media appearance on February 6, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer shared his thoughts on the Steelers’ quarterback situation. He suggested that Wilson won’t be back in 2025 but noted that Fields’ future is still uncertain.

“I don’t think that’s gonna happen, either,” Glazer said about Wilson’s return. “I think you’ll see Russell starting fresh somewhere else.”

As for Fields, Glazer remarked, “I have no idea. I don’t think… I don’t think they know who their starting quarterback will be yet.”

With the possibility of a new starter in 2025, CBS SportsJordan Dajani has named Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford as a potential candidate for the Steelers.

The Steelers may be preparing for another reset of their quarterback room, as both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are looking for new deals. Things aren’t exactly peachy in Pittsburgh right now. No one cares that Mike Tomlin hasn’t registered a losing season in 18 straight years with the Steelers, because Pittsburgh hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016. The Steelers have lost six straight postseason matchups, and have allowed at least 28 points in all six of those losses. It’s the longest such streak in NFL history!

What’s the best option for Pittsburgh at quarterback? Trading up in the draft and hoping Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders is the answer? Probably not. Do the Steelers want to enter the bidding war for Sam Darnold, or take a flier on the 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers? Maybe Stafford is the best option — if he’s made available.

Matthew Stafford’s future with the Los Angeles Rams is somewhat uncertain, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that “a deal likely needs to be worked out” for the two-time Pro Bowler to stay in Los Angeles.

The Rams might be hesitant to commit to another long-term contract with the 37-year-old, especially after news surfaced that they plan to trade Stafford’s close friend and top receiver, Cooper Kupp. This could prompt Stafford to seek a fresh start and potentially request a trade.

If Stafford is available on the trade market this offseason, the Steelers should make a strong push to acquire the former No. 1 overall pick. Stafford would be an improvement over both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, making Pittsburgh a serious contender in the AFC.

Stafford, the 2011 AP Comeback Player of the Year, remains one of the league’s top pocket passers, throwing for 20 touchdowns and just eight interceptions in 2024. He’s led the Rams to three winning seasons in four years, including a Super Bowl victory in 2021.

Given his age and contract situation, Stafford’s trade value may not be very high. A few Day 2 picks or perhaps a first-round pick could be enough to land him. However, the Steelers would also need to negotiate a restructured deal with the veteran quarterback.

While Stafford may only have a few years left in the NFL, he remains one of the most dependable and accurate quarterbacks in the game. If he becomes available, Pittsburgh should seriously consider trading for him.
