Vikings Hit a Red Flag with Sam Darnold’s Backup Role!
The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly considering Daniel Jones to fill their veteran backup QB role, with general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah mentioning him as a “potential option” and head coach Kevin O’Connell expressing confidence in Jones running the offense. However, Jones may find better opportunities elsewhere, especially with rising optimism about J.J. McCarthy’s recovery for Week 1 after knee surgery.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals have shown serious interest in Jones. According to “The PHNX Sports” podcast, the Cardinals were in talks with Jones multiple times after his release from the Giants, and general manager Monti Ossenfort remains keen on signing him in free agency this March. Don’t be surprised if Jones lands in Arizona soon.
Three years ago, questioning Kyler Murray’s future in Arizona would’ve seemed ridiculous. The former No. 1 overall pick won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 and made back-to-back Pro Bowls. But things have changed.
Since signing a five-year, $230.5 million extension in 2022, Murray has posted a 14-22 record as a starter. While Arizona has worked on rebuilding the offense with picks like Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride, Murray has yet to lead a winning season since the contract.
The current Cardinals leadership, led by GM Monti Ossenfort and head coach Jonathan Gannon, inherited Murray but may be open to moving on by next offseason. Arizona could cut or trade Murray in 2024, swallowing $20 million in dead cap but saving $35.3 million in future cap space.
If Daniel Jones joins the Cardinals, he could find himself in a similar position to Minnesota, backing up a high draft pick. However, the situation in Arizona might be more appealing, especially considering J.J. McCarthy’s likely long-term role in Minnesota.
