Minnesota Gophers’ Star Guard Offers Update on Lower Body Injury

Minnesota’s standout guard, Mara Braun, has been sidelined since November 17 due to a foot injury. In her first interview since the injury, she spoke with FOX9 on the Gophers coaches’ show, expressing hope that she’ll return to the court soon.

This marks the second consecutive year that Braun has struggled with injuries, as she missed 14 games last season due to a different foot injury. Before deciding on surgery again, she was averaging 13.6 points in five games this season.

“At first, I felt a lot of anger. Obviously, having this happen in back-to-back seasons wasn’t ideal,” Braun admitted. “I was frustrated because I thought I had done everything right. But, ultimately, I have a lot of faith and know there’s a plan, even with everything going on. Once I processed my emotions, I just attacked the situation like I did the first time. It’s been a tough and emotional journey, like any injury, but I’m doing well and making progress.”

Braun made a significant impact as a true freshman, averaging 16.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists over 56 career games. Her absence has been noticeable for Minnesota, and while it’s uncertain when she’ll return, it may not be until next season.

“When it comes to rehab, it’s a day-by-day process,” Braun said when asked about her recovery. “I just show up and focus on the work I need to do, trusting our trainers and strength coaches to get me back on the court whenever that may be. I’m improving every day, feeling good, and I’m giving my best each time.”

With only three regular season games left before the Big Ten tournament, the Gophers are still fighting for an NCAA Tournament spot. Having Braun back would be a major advantage as they aim for their first tournament appearance since the 2017-18 season.

“I just want to play and stay healthy,” Braun shared.
