Phillies Swing for the Fences, Trade for $313 Million AL East Star

The Boston Red Sox are facing a tricky situation this offseason with two third basemen, Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman, but only one spot at the hot corner.

Boston has reportedly explored moving Devers to designated hitter, but the $313 million star has expressed hesitation about accepting that role.

While the issue is likely to be resolved, there’s a chance Devers could firmly reject the DH position and request a trade out of Boston.

If that happens, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer suggests the Philadelphia Phillies could be a prime destination for Devers, even offering a hypothetical trade scenario to send him to Philly.

“Castellanos can be an infuriating hitter, but the Red Sox would still get solid power from him as their primary DH and occasional right fielder,” Rymer noted. “As for Bohm, the Red Sox could use him as a versatile piece, particularly against left-handed pitchers. He owns an .870 OPS against lefties for his career, compared to just a .693 OPS against righties.

“If the Phillies plan to keep Devers and Trea Turner together long-term, there’s little reason to hold on to Miller. In Boston’s system, he could develop into either a bat-first shortstop or a well-rounded third baseman.”

Of all the hypothetical trades, this one makes the most sense. While it may still feel unlikely, it’s a trade that could work for both teams.

The Red Sox wouldn’t be taking a major hit by losing Devers. If Miller develops, this deal might not be seen as a huge loss for Boston, especially if Devers forces his way out.

In return, the Red Sox would gain a win-now bat in Castellanos and an All-Star infielder to replace Devers’ spot in the lineup.

The Phillies, on the other hand, would clearly benefit from this trade. With rumors swirling about them shopping both Bohm and Castellanos, trading the pair along with Miller for Devers seems like an easy decision.”
