Top Base Star’s ‘freak injury’ shakes up Phillies’ bench battle

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Weston Wilson was a top contender for the Phillies’ final bench spot this spring, thanks to his ability to play both the infield and outfield, along with being a right-handed hitter. However, he suffered a Grade 2 left oblique strain on Friday and will be out for at least six weeks, ending his bid for an Opening Day roster spot.

This opens up competition for the bench. Edmundo Sosa is expected to make the team and could play the outfield, offering another right-handed bat. Johan Rojas is likely the fourth outfielder, with either Rafael Marchán or Garrett Stubbs as backup catcher.

For the last spot, Buddy Kennedy, Kody Clemens, and Cal Stevenson remain in the running. Kennedy’s chances have improved as a right-handed hitter and outfielder. The Phillies could also pursue a right-handed-hitting corner outfielder before Opening Day.

Wilson, however, remains focused on rehabbing and returning to help the team. “I’m going to come back stronger and healthier,” he said. “I want to win a World Series.”
