Former Jets Coach Broke off Ties to Join the Vikings

Throughout its history, the New York Jets have had a number of coaches who were disliked by the fanbase for various reasons, but few generated as much frustration as former offensive line coach Keith Carter. Hired by former head coach Robert Saleh before the 2023 season, Carter struggled to field a competent offensive line for two years. After Saleh was fired and Aaron Glenn took over as the 22nd head coach in franchise history, Carter was quickly let go to pursue other opportunities. Now, it appears Carter has landed a new role. The Minnesota Vikings announced on Monday afternoon that they hired him as their assistant offensive line coach for the 2024 season.

“I want to get stronger overall,” said Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. “I love what Chris Kuper’s been able to do in that room, but I wanted to bring in a former head coach who’s been involved in some of the best rushing attacks in the league over the past few years. I think this is a great time for him in his career, and he’s really excited to come to Minnesota. I believe he’ll help us a lot, especially with our run game.”

Carter’s time with the Tennessee Titans, where he also coached the offensive line, came with some baggage, and his efforts to build a solid offensive line with the Jets were unsuccessful. The Jets’ offensive line ranked among the worst in the league during his tenure. Now 42 years old, Carter won’t be returning to the Jets and instead joins a team with playoff aspirations in his first year with the Vikings, a team that could benefit greatly from his expertise.
