Gophers’ Johnson Faces Make-or-Break Moment

Is Ben Johnson’s Job as Minnesota Gophers Men’s Basketball Coach in Jeopardy?

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reports that the likelihood of Minnesota firing coach Ben Johnson has been fluctuating throughout the season. The Gophers struggled early with a 0-6 start in Big Ten play, though they’ve since won six of their last ten games. However, a recent home loss to Penn State raised questions about his future.

This would be Johnson’s fourth season without an NCAA tournament appearance or a winning Big Ten record. Much of the struggle has been due to NIL issues, with key players like Elijah Hawkins and Pharrel Payne transferring, weakening the team. Johnson has recruited talent, but the roster’s inconsistency and lack of resources have hindered his success.

Looking ahead, Borzello reports that Johnson could have more NIL money to build next season’s roster. With his ability to recruit NBA-level talent, if given proper resources, Johnson may have the chance to turn things around. Time will tell if he gets that opportunity.
