The 2025 NFL season officially begins on Wednesday, March 12, at 4:00 PM Eastern Time, marking the start of a period where teams can initiate signings, trades, and roster moves. The Detroit Lions, who claimed the NFC North title last season, have yet to make any official roster additions.
One anticipated move involves linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who is expected to be released when the new league year begins, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. This will make Reeves-Maybin a free agent.
Now 30 years old, Reeves-Maybin was drafted by the Lions in 2017 after his college career at Tennessee. Except for the 2022 season with the Houston Texans, he has spent his entire career in Detroit. The Lions signed him to a $7.5 million contract last offseason and named him one of their captains for the 2024 season. In early March 2024, he was also elected to a two-year term as president of the NFL Players Association. “I am honored by the trust the Board has shown in me, and I will work hard to be a voice and advocate for all players,” Reeves-Maybin said. “It will be my mission to continue to serve and unify our membership and inspire more players to use their voice in advocating for the union and our game.”
Reeves-Maybin, a Pro Bowler in 2023, has played in 114 NFL games. Over his career, he has accumulated three fumble recoveries, five forced fumbles, and 155 solo tackles. In 2024, a neck injury limited him to special teams duties.
The Lions are likely parting ways with Reeves-Maybin for financial reasons, as both Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams are eligible for contract extensions when the new league year begins. Detroit is focused on maintaining strong relationships with these key players.
