The Arizona Cardinals could be looking to keep a local favorite in the NFL. Arizona State Sun Devils running back Cam Skattebo has become one of the top names in the 2025 NFL Draft after a standout season in 2025, finishing fifth in Heisman Trophy voting. While there are questions about his transition to the pros, several teams are eager to scout him — and the Cardinals may be one of those teams.

At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, Skattebo confirmed that he had spoken with the Cardinals, as reported by PHNX. While it’s not surprising that the hometown team would be interested in keeping a local hero, it raises questions considering the current roster.
The Cardinals recently extended veteran James Conner’s contract for two more years, through 2026, and also spent a Day 2 draft pick on Florida State’s Trey Benson last year. With other depth-chart contributors, the need for another running back isn’t immediately clear.
However, you can never have too many playmakers, and Skattebo is undoubtedly one of the best in this draft class.
Known as “The People’s Running Back,” Skattebo is a versatile player who can run, catch, pass, and even punt. He finished second in the nation with 1,711 rushing yards, adding 21 touchdowns in 13 games. As a receiver, he caught 45 passes for 605 yards and three touchdowns. And yes, he even threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns (with one interception) while completing 7 of 17 passes for Arizona State. Additionally, he averaged 42.3 yards per punt in 2023.
While Skattebo’s ability to run and score is unquestioned, concerns about his size and athleticism at the next level remain. He chose not to participate in workouts at the Combine, opting to wait for Arizona State’s Pro Day to showcase his skills. This decision has left some unanswered questions, but it only postpones the inevitable need to assess his potential.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future in the NFL, Skattebo’s talent is undeniable, and for many teams, that could be enough to take a chance on him.
Though some teams may view him as a limited runner who isn’t worth the investment, others will see a player with the drive and determination to succeed — a factor that could ultimately prove crucial.
It’s no surprise that the Cardinals are showing interest in Skattebo. Despite the depth in their backfield, there are multiple reasons why bringing him aboard makes sense. Keeping Skattebo in Arizona would undoubtedly be a dream come true for local fans.
