Forced out by Duke, Star finds a home at Oregon State

Oregon State quarterback Maalik Murphy is the most significant addition to the Beavers’ transfer portal class this season. The experienced signal caller joins Trent Bray’s team after serving as the starting quarterback at Duke and previously at Texas.

In 2024, Murphy led Duke to a 9-3 record, throwing for 2,933 yards and setting a single-season record for the Blue Devils with 26 touchdowns.

As spring practices kicked off in Corvallis on Tuesday, Murphy is the likely starter for Oregon State. He also spoke to the media about his preparation for his fourth college football season and his transition to his new team.

Key Points:

  • On choosing Oregon State after visiting before committing to Duke: “It really felt like home this time around. The first time I visited, it was late at night, and I didn’t have much time to get to know the place. I only got to go up to Coach Gundy’s office to watch film. This time, I had a chance to interact with the players, experience the atmosphere, and truly feel welcomed. As a player and a person, that’s what you want – to feel at home. That’s why I’m here.”
  • On leaving Duke: “Leaving Duke was definitely not my choice. I had to accept the situation and move forward. There are no hard feelings about how things ended. It is what it is, and I’m happy with where I am now.”
  • On his goals for the season: “I just want to win. It’s always been about winning. When the team wins, it helps everyone achieve their personal goals. As long as we’re winning, I feel like everything is moving in the right direction for both me and my teammates.”
