Patriots Target Rival’s Star WR for Potential Trade

The New York Jets cut Davante Adams on Tuesday, sparking a frenzy of teams eager to add the superstar wide receiver to their rosters.

Could the New England Patriots join the race? Sophie Weller from A to Z Sports thinks it’s possible, laying out a compelling case for the Patriots to pursue Adams.

“The Patriots have the funds to make it happen, with a league-high $127.7 million in cap space,” Weller explained. “But money isn’t the only factor. If Adams joins New England, he’d instantly become the team’s top wide receiver again, and he’d also get the chance to face the Jets twice a year for some revenge.”

Weller also pointed out another key factor: Josh McDaniels, the Patriots’ new offensive coordinator, coached Adams during his best season with the Las Vegas Raiders.

“The biggest draw is the chance to reunite with Josh McDaniels, who was head coach of the Raiders when Adams had one of his best years in 2022,” Weller said.

That season, Adams posted 100 catches, 1,516 yards, and 14 touchdowns, showing McDaniels’ ability to maximize the six-time Pro Bowler’s talents.

However, the big question remains: Would Adams actually want to play for the Patriots? Given his stage in his career, he likely wants to join a contender, and the Patriots haven’t been one recently. With a 4-13 record in each of the last two seasons, New England doesn’t exactly fit the bill, despite the intrigue of a fresh start with rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

So while the thought of Adams joining the Patriots is exciting, it seems unlikely to happen.
