On Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings extended forward Austin Watson’s contract with a one-year, two-way deal.

The 33-year-old Ann Arbor native has spent most of the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins and, along with goaltender Sebastian Cossa, represented the team at the AHL All-Star Classic.

Seeking size and toughness, the Red Wings signed Watson (6-4, 210) to a training camp tryout in August, which led to him securing a one-year contract. Watson has recorded 12 goals, 20 assists, and 94 penalty minutes in 52 games with the Griffins.

Watson made two appearances with the Red Wings in October, registering no points and accumulating two penalty minutes.

A first-round pick by Nashville (18th overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft, Watson has tallied 60 goals, 118 assists, and 707 penalty minutes in 517 NHL games with the Predators, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Detroit.
