The New York Jets have secured their new quarterback.
Justin Fields is set to sign a two-year, $40 million contract with the team, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Monday.
Rapoport reports that Fields is expected to start for the Jets in 2025, with veteran Tyrod Taylor and 2024 fifth-round draft pick Jordan Travis as the other quarterbacks on the roster.
The 26-year-old Fields played for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, making six starts and finishing with a 4-2 record. His season stats included 1,106 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, one interception, 289 rushing yards, and five rushing touchdowns.
Before his time in Pittsburgh, Fields spent his first three seasons as the Chicago Bears‘ starting quarterback. Drafted by Chicago at No. 11 overall in 2021, he never had a winning season with the Bears before being traded last March.
Fields’ most notable achievements came in college at Ohio State, where he went 20-2 as a starter. In New York, he’ll reunite with one of his top college receivers, Garrett Wilson.
The Jets are hoping Fields and Wilson can recreate their college chemistry at MetLife Stadium following the disappointing Aaron Rodgers era. Rodgers’ two seasons in New York were marred by setbacks, including his Achilles injury in Week 1 of 2023 and a turbulent 2024 with roster changes and struggles.
New York’s 14-season playoff drought is the longest in major American sports. Their last playoff appearance came in 2010, when they lost in the AFC Championship game.
With a new head coach in Aaron Glenn, a new general manager in Darren Mougey, and now Fields at quarterback, the Jets are ushering in yet another new chapter for a franchise that has seen constant turnover over the past 20 years.
