The running back position has been largely undervalued by NFL decision-makers over the past decade, but there is growing evidence that the position is in the early stages of a revival. The Minnesota Vikings have played a part in this shift by finalizing a new contract with Aaron Jones, who is set to sign it on March 12 when the new league year begins.
Jones has agreed to a two-year extension worth up to $20 million, according to multiple sources. He will receive $11.5 million in guaranteed money, including an $8 million signing bonus. This is a significant achievement for the 31-year-old running back and a win for the position as a whole.
Jones had a solid 2024 season with the Vikings, though there is still room for improvement. The fact that both general manager Kwesi Adofo–Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell are confident in his abilities – despite him being past the typical prime age for running backs – is a notable success for the position.
Jones made valuable contributions to the Vikings last season and is expected to play an even bigger role in 2025. His numbers were strong, running for 1,138 yards with an average of 4.5 yards per carry and 5 touchdowns. He also caught 51 of 62 targets from Sam Darnold for 408 yards and 2 touchdowns.
His combined 1,546 yards suggest that he could be an elite performer next season. While he may not be in the same league as top-tier backs like Saquon Barkley or Derrick Henry, there’s no reason why he can’t be part of the next group of standout running backs.
For that to happen, Jones must become more effective in the red zone. Seven total touchdowns is respectable, but it’s not enough. A back of his caliber should be reaching double-digit touchdowns. Additionally, he needs to improve his ball security. He fumbled five times last season – three as a runner and two as a receiver – and reducing that number will be essential for his success in 2025.
