Ex-Ravens Coach Busted for Identity Theft!
A former assistant coach for the Baltimore Ravens and a staff member under both John and Jim Harbaugh has been indicted on charges of computer hacking, identity theft, and illegally obtaining thousands of private photos and videos of college students. Matt Weiss, who worked with the Ravens from 2009 to 2020, is accused of hacking into the accounts of thousands of college athletes to access intimate content, according to a federal indictment filed in Detroit this week. He faces 14 counts of unauthorized computer access and 10 counts of identity theft.
After leaving John Harbaugh’s staff in 2020, Weiss joined Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan as co-offensive coordinator but was fired in 2023 for failing to cooperate with an investigation into his computer access. The indictment states that Weiss infiltrated databases from over 100 colleges and universities managed by a third-party vendor, then accessed the social media, email, and cloud storage accounts of more than 2,000 athletes.
According to the indictment, Weiss specifically targeted female college athletes, selecting them based on their school, athletic background, and physical traits. His primary objective was to obtain private images and videos meant to remain confidential within intimate relationships.
Weiss’s home in Ann Arbor was searched by police in January 2023, shortly before his termination. At the time, he stated that he was cooperating with authorities and looked forward to resolving the matter.
During his tenure with the Ravens, Weiss was part of the coaching staff that won Super Bowl XLVII. As a linebackers coach, he played a role in helping Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil become the NFL’s top sack duo and assisted C.J. Mosley in becoming the first rookie in Ravens history to earn a Pro Bowl selection.
