The Michigan State football team has been juggling numerous responsibilities this spring. With spring practices underway, the Spartans are utilizing their 15 allotted sessions to blend new players with the existing roster. Alongside this, the coaching staff has been busy arranging and welcoming a slew of campus visitors while also focusing on scouting and offering scholarships to prospective talents.
Recently, an offer was made to Obinna Umeh, a 2026 edge rusher from St. Thomas High School in Houston, Texas. Umeh has been catching the eye of several Power Four programs. Following his offer from Michigan State, he also received proposals from Duke and Georgia Tech.
According to 247Sports, Umeh is currently rated as “warm” for Stanford and Pittsburgh, the only schools he has scheduled official visits with so far, set for June 12 at Pitt and June 20 at Stanford. Michigan State will likely strive to arrange a visit with Umeh promptly.
Though Umeh may not boast a high star rating, his talent could easily be overshadowed by the vast pool of skilled players in Texas high school football. However, his impressive 6-foot-4, 225-pound physique is hard to overlook, attracting coaches who can refine his skills later. The Spartans have been prioritizing recruits based on potential and compatibility over mere rankings.
Head coach Jonathan Smith and defensive coordinator Joe Rossi are targeting athletes who align with the team’s culture, are coachable, and possess the desired attributes. This strategy is already proving effective in the 2026 class, with Michigan State securing commits from under-the-radar prospects who have the qualities the staff values.
Umeh exemplifies a player who might not yet be on the radar of elite programs but has the raw ability to excel at the collegiate level with proper guidance. As his profile rises, it’s imperative for Michigan State to forge a strong connection with him and bring him to campus soon.
