Spartans Set to Land Top Elite Rusher
The Michigan State football team has had a busy spring, juggling various priorities. Spring practice has begun, giving the Spartans 15 crucial sessions to integrate new players with the team. At the same time, they’ve been hosting numerous visits and scouting for talent, resulting in a wave of new offers.
The latest offer goes to Obinna Umeh, a 2026 edge rusher from St. Thomas High School in Houston, Texas. Umeh has been gaining significant attention from major programs lately. After receiving an offer from Michigan State, he also picked up offers from Duke and Georgia Tech. According to 247Sports, Umeh is currently considered “warm” for Stanford and Pittsburgh, with both schools securing official visits: Pitt on June 12 and Stanford on June 20. Michigan State will likely work to arrange a visit soon.

While Umeh doesn’t yet have an abundance of stars, it’s understandable given the fierce competition in Texas high school football. However, his 6-foot-4 frame and 225-pound build are impossible to overlook. This size alone will attract coaches, who can later focus on refining his technique. The Spartans have been prioritizing players based on potential and fit rather than just rankings, and Umeh fits that mold.
Coach Jonathan Smith and defensive coordinator Joe Rossi are seeking players who will align with their culture, are eager to be coached, and possess the right physical attributes. Michigan State’s recruitment strategy for the 2026 class has already shown success, targeting players who may not be on the radar of powerhouse schools but have the right intangibles.
Umeh is a prime example of a recruit who might be flying under the radar for some of the larger programs but has the potential to excel at the next level with proper coaching. As his recruitment heats up, it will be crucial for Michigan State to quickly establish a strong relationship and get him on campus soon.
