Rangers Strengthen Infield with Top Prospect in Latest MLB Mock Draft!
The Texas Rangers missed the playoffs last year, but they secured the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. While this pick isn’t as high as their 2023 selection of Wyatt Langford at No. 4, Langford is already thriving in his second MLB season. Last year, Texas also selected catcher Malcolm Moore at the end of the first round, and he’s now part of their minor league system.

Heading into this year’s draft, the Rangers have a strong farm system and several directions to consider. One option is adding another pitcher, as both 2021 and 2022 first-round picks, Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker, are already in the organization. Alternatively, the Rangers could focus on bolstering their infield.
Baseball America’s recent mock draft predicted that the Rangers would select shortstop Kayson Cunningham out of Johnson High School in San Antonio, Texas, a city that produced first-round pick Josh Jung in 2019. However, the Rangers already have Corey Seager locked in at shortstop through 2031 and 19-year-old Sebastian Walcott, ranked as the organization’s top prospect, also plays the position.
This could suggest that Cunningham might transition to second base, currently occupied by Marcus Semien. Cunningham will need time to develop, but if second base is his future role, he could be ready to take over once Semien’s contract expires after the 2028 season.
The 2025 MLB Draft will take place during All-Star Weekend in Atlanta, on July 13-14. The draft order is influenced by penalties on teams like the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees for exceeding the Competitive Balance Tax threshold.
