Gophers Hotshot, Ex-Top-100 Gem, Hits Transfer Portal

McKenna Johnson, a guard for the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team, announced on Thursday via X (previously known as Twitter) that she has entered the NCAA transfer portal. With three years of eligibility left, Johnson shared her decision on the social media platform.

In her X post, Johnson expressed gratitude to coach Dawn Plitzuweit and the coaching staff for the chance to play at the University of Minnesota.

She also thanked her teammates for their support and the memories created during her time there, noting that she’ll always value the relationships she built. After careful thought, Johnson concluded that entering the transfer portal was the best step for her remaining three years of eligibility.

Johnson joined the team early as an enrollee in the 2023-24 season but did not play in any games that year. In her freshman season of 2024-25, she appeared in 24 games, posting averages of 2.9 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.

Her standout performance came on January 8, when she scored a season-high 15 points in a victory against Rutgers, one of her two double-digit scoring games this past season.

A highly touted recruit from Wilmont Union High School in Wilmont, Wisconsin, Johnson was ranked No. 60 in ESPN’s 2024 top-100 list. During her senior year of high school, she averaged an impressive 26.1 points and 10 rebounds per game.
