Matt Rhule Provides Update on Nebraska’s Running Back Depth for Spring

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule addressed the media last week, providing an update on the running back position, which promises to be one of the most intriguing battles to follow throughout the spring.

The Huskers have several candidates at running back, led by Emmett Johnson. Johnson had 117 carries for 598 yards and one touchdown last season, while also contributing in the passing game with 39 receptions—marking the highest total by a Nebraska running back since 2007.

Kwinten Ives and Mehki Nelson are also expected to be key contributors. Ives played in nine games, totaling six carries for seven yards, and scored his first collegiate touchdown against Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl. Nelson, meanwhile, appeared in just one game—the season opener against UTEP. Freshman Jamarion Parker adds an element of excitement, coming off a standout high school career in which he rushed for 1,730 yards and 24 touchdowns on 168 carries as a senior.

According to Rivals.com’s Steve Marik, Rhule expressed optimism about the running back group. With so many potential options, the position will be one to keep an eye on throughout spring practices, as Nebraska looks to build depth and find consistency at running back.
